Offering unlimited opportunities for persons with mental illness access the same worlds of friendship, employment, housing, and educational aspirations as the rest of society.
Prime Time House was established in 1988 and has been a member of the International Center for Clubhouse Development (ICCD) since. We are one of over 300 Clubhouses around the world that follows the International Standards for Clubhouse programs. When you walk into Prime Time House, you will immediately notice that we are different from other mental health programs. We are a clubhouse where all members are needed, wanted, and appreciated. Our goal is to help members establish a foundation of skills that range from vocational to social skills. Members are involved in all aspects in the operation of the Clubhouse. All of us at Prime Time House believe in focusing on their individual abilities and strengths as opposed to a diagnoses or illness. Together, staff and member work on achieving our goals and aspirations in an effort to better our clubhouse community and ourselves as individuals.
The descriptive name of “Clubhouse” was taken from the original language that was used to communicate the work and vision of the first Clubhouse, Fountain House, in New York City which started in 1948. As the first community of its kind, Fountain House has served as the model for all subsequent clubhouses that have developed around the world. Fountain House began in 1948 when a group of patients were discharged from a psychiatric hospital and met together informally as kind of a “club.” It was organized to be a support system for people living with mental illness, rather than a service or treatment plan. They called themselves WANA, or We Are Not Alone. It was an opportunity for them to relate to others who were dealing with the same obstacles and concerns. Communities around the world that have modeled themselves after Fountain House have embraced the term “Clubhouse” because it clearly communicates the message of membership and belonging. This message is at the very heart of the clubhouse way of working.
